This is a project comprising a series of short-form cultural documentaries, each focusing on a different contemporary Ambedkarite artist or creative practitioner.
Ambedkarite culture is undeniably blooming. We want to document this renaissance from the thick of it to witness the growth of our collaborative networks of warmth and passion. In a world that emphasises the struggles and suffering of caste-oppressed people, we want our work to be proof of life - joyous, triumphant and looking ahead/forward facing. Films and images about Ambedkarite artists are from upper-caste or Western perspectives. But now, we're positioned to construct narratives about interstitial connections and spatial links, exploring them as technical masters and generative community members.
My creative partner for this project is Mithran R. Talitha (he/him) - a freelance journalist and cultural worker based in New Delhi. He’s also the host of a political commentary and Ambedkarite theory interview podcast Clear Blue Skies S1: Experiencing Ambedkar that he started during his bachelor's at UBC, Vancouver. As a reporter, his beat has always centered on the peripheries and margins from the lens of politics and culture.
This project is supported in part by the Generator Cooperative Art Production Fund. The project is currently in production (2023).
